Volunteer Oportunities
Many volunteer opportunities await you at the Houston Zoo! Whether you like to educate people about wildlife, work behind-the-scenes in our animal exhibits or help out at events, we have a program that is perfect for you. No prior experience is necessary, just a willingness to learn and join a great team.

Docents: Docents are volunteer teachers who educate visitors about our animals. You must be 18 or older and the time commitment is only 5-9 hours a month after completion of the training course.

Green Team: These volunteers’ help all over the Zoo in various activities. Their help is used as aides in the
classroom, for Zoo events, assisting with Night Prowls and Zoo Snoozes, office projects and helping with the
animal keepers.

Zoo Crew: The Zoo Crew is a group of talented, fun and hardworking teens who volunteer at the Zoo during the summer months. New Zoo Crew members start in the summer and are encouraged to continue throughout the year (school schedules permitting). Duties may include: Helping with summer camps, assisting with programs
on our Children’s Zoo Stage, supporting zookeepers, office tasks. To become a member of the Zoo Crew, you
must be aged 14 - 18 years old. An application will be posted on our website in January which you will need to fill out and return to us at the following address:

Interns: College students interested in a career in conservation, wildlife management, environmental
education, or a related zoo field may apply for our intern program.

Corporate Volunteers: Corporate volunteers are people who contribute time during their weekends to help
improve the Zoo. Each spring and fall, the Zoo hosts Corporate Volunteer Days, like ‘Renew the Zoo’ or ‘Spring Cleaning’ and corporations bring their best and brightest out to do Zoo chores like landscaping or painting. The Zoo also appreciates it when companies send along a check to cover the costs of their employees’ work

Guild: Guild members support the Houston Zoo in a number of ways, including: coordinating and staffing events and lectures, preparing crafts for events, and helping in the office with administrative work. Weekend and
weekday/night opportunities are available.
